FAIR and responsible data practices unlock value

Use this framework to generate the necessary data management and access plan for a successful project

Is this for you?

Why FAIR? — Discover how applying FAIR principles enhances collaboration, boosts project outcomes, and delivers a stronger return on investment. The FAIR Process Framework is rooted in extensive research, reflecting best practices and impactful results.

The steps — This six-step framework was designed in collaboration with over 32 global partners. It offers manageable, practical activities that help you and your team implement a FAIR and responsible data strategy from concept through execution.

Investments in action — Find out about three Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation investments, and how they are implementing FAIR and responsible data strategies across diverse fields using the FAIR Process Framework.

How does it work?

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s FAIR Process Framework offers a comprehensive suite of tools to guide foundation staff and partners in implementing FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) principles across data-rich AgDev investments. This framework aims to support the full potential of AgDev data, aligning with the foundation’s Open Access commitments to promote data availability, usability, and accessibility.

Are you a Program Officer from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation? Support your partners by directing them to this framework: Use the Job Aid for foundation grant-making tools to enable data access.

Are you seeking foundation investment for a project that will generate data? Use this framework from concept note to delivery, and, if you are new to the FAIR Principles you can start with the FAIR Primer.

Investment types and illustrative scenarios

The six steps will be applied differently based on your project. To help, we researched common AgDev investments and developed three 'investment types' and two 'illustrative scenarios.' Each activity page includes examples from these use cases to guide your FAIR data management and implementation.

If your project is delivering a digital product or has a significant digital scope, refer to the digital solution investment type throughout steps 1 to 5:

AgriConnect: a digital solution investment

Recently, a large African-led organization, AgriConnect, has decided to FAIRify its data processes. Its work focuses on scaling agricultural innovations to improve smallholder livelihoods, and ultimately increase food security across the continent.

If your project is focused on developing and delivering processes and governance, refer to the policy and advocacy investment type throughout steps 1 to 5:

AgroThrive: a policy and advocacy investment

The well-established policy and strategy organization AgroThrive works to improve enabling conditions for people across the AgDev ecosystem (including smallholder farmers), with the ultimate goal of improving smallholder livelihoods, and ultimately increasing food security.

If your project involves researchers working in-the-field, refer to the field research investment type throughout steps 1 to 5:

NourishGen BioTech (NGBT): a field research investment

NourishGen BioTech (NGBT) is a multinational research organization committed to combating global hunger, addressing gender disparities, and mitigating the impact of climate shocks on vulnerable populations. Its lab-to-field approach has already improved nutritional outcomes for millions of people by optimizing crops for widespread planting.

Refer to this illustrative scenario when you put your data management access plan into action in step 6:

Project SIS: a soil information system initiative

In the small, mountainous country, farmers have been struggling with declining crop yields due to soil erosion and inadequate fertilizer use. To address this issue, the government has initiated a project to create a centralized soil information system (SIS) that will help optimize fertilizer use and improve crop yields in the highland regions.

Refer to this illustrative scenario when you put your data management access plan into action in step 6:

Waterways: an agriculture productivity initiative

The Waterways project helps farmers optimize crop output in a hot, dry region with seasonal rains, focusing on improving water use, crop patterns, and access to reliable agricultural advice in challenging conditions.
