Is FAIR open?

FAIR and open data are distinct but interconnected concepts in data management, sharing, and accessibility.

How is FAIR data and open data different?

We have explored the differences and similarities between FAIR data and open data, and looked at the sensitivities of using the right words in difference context.

Data is on a spectrum, and while open data should be FAIR, and FAIR data could be open, neither implies the other automatically.

The ODI’s Data Spectrum was designed to help users understand the language of data — and how it exists on a spectrum from closed to shared to open data. This version of the Data Spectrum focuses specifically on closed to shared to open data in agriculture.

Research with CGIAR projects demonstrated that a pattern whereby the earlier planning begins the greater FAIR maturity can be achieved, and at lower cost.

POs, grantees and other users can think through the possible maturity levels of the data within an investment and make considered, informed decisions about how to approach data problems and assets based on understanding where they sit in the broader data landscape.
