CGIAR:
Workflows

How to combine and use these CGIAR Recipes to best suit your investment needs

Why do I need a workflow?

Workflows are a set of activities that combine actions and recipes to support a grantee through the process of applying for investment funding and establishing the project after approval.

Click the tabs to read a description of each of the workflows, or scroll down to select your workflow.

If you’d like to learn more about the recipes first, go to the CGIAR Recipes page.

This video explains the driving factors behind the activities within the workflows.

To identify the most suitable workflow, consider the following three questions about the data your program will produce:

1. Perceived value of data: is the data your program will generate unique or valuable beyond the lifespan of the project?

2. Previous FAIR expertise: have you had limited experience of working with this consortium to deliver FAIR data outcomes?

3. Interoperability Challenges: is you consortium capturing and processing diverse datasets from multiple research centers and institutions?

  • If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions we recommend the ‘Guided FAIR workflow’ which offers a more structured approach to support FAIR outcomes. (Activities G1-6)
  • If you feel confident in completing the DMAP independently, you may choose to follow the Independent FAIR workflow’, which is a less structured approach. (Activities I1-4)
  • If you answered “no” to all the above questions, you could consider following the ‘Foundational FAIR workflow’, which is tailored for investments with minimal FAIR-related complexities. (Activities D1-5)

Activity G3

  • How to complete the Direction Setting section
  • Set goals to increase the FAIR maturity of the investment.
  • If your investment has not been approved, send the completed Direction Setting section within the DMAP to the PO for approval.
  • If your investment has been approved, we recommend sharing the DMAP with your FAIR advisor (email:fair@cabi.org) to update them and receive feedback.
  • If you have been asked to make edits, proceed to Activity G4
  • If no edits are needed, go to Activity G5

Activity F1

Activity F2

  • Ensure that you have answered the GS8 question on the DMAP. Pass the DMAP back to the PO and await review.

FAIR data assessment workflow

Activity D1

  • After a data assessment request has been received, or a scheduled data assessment activity has arisen, determine and locate the investment datasets that are within scope to assess.

Activity D2

Activity D3

  • Review the reports of the data assessments and determine with a FAIR Advisor as to whether any action will be taken. If so, proceed to

Activity D4.

  • If no action is required, proceed to Activity D5.

Activity D4

  • Where FAIR assessment scores may be lower than expected, conduct a root cause analysis by checking to see if statements in the Implementation section of the DMAP have been implemented.
  • You can read about root cause analysis reviews in the recipe for Activity D5
