CGIAR:
Recipes and tools

CGIAR Recipes integrate the FAIR Process Framework activities to resources which ensure the delivery of FAIR agricultural data for innovation

In context

The Gates Foundation, in collaboration with CGIAR and CABI, is leading efforts to improve FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data practices across agricultural development investments. Recognizing the importance of sustainable and responsible data management, a number or tools and accompanying sets of instructions – “recipes” – have been developed. These resources are currently tailored for foundation Program Officers (POs) and CGIAR grantees, with the intention of ensuring investments begin with strong FAIR data practices and conclude with datasets that maintain high FAIR standards.

For grantees, the recipes aid planning, monitoring and improvement during the ‘Invest’ and ‘Execute’ stages of the investment; enabling better FAIR practices from the outset. When used by PO’s, outputs from each tool allow for better risk assessment and easier management of their project portfolios.

This structured approach is designed to enhance the overall impact of agricultural investments throughout the project lifecycle and after.

Workflows showing a path of activities through the recipes and tools can be found on CGIAR workflows page.

The barriers to adoption are not always technical, it might be a matter of support, and giving people enough guidance, training, and resources to implement FAIR data practices.

The framework currently consists of three tools and their supporting recipes.

You can see a workflow of activities using the recipes and tools on the CGIAR workflows page.

This explainer video describes how these resources can be used to solve recurring issues with FAIR data management as the results of each aspect inform and improve the FAIR capabilities of an investment.
